He appeared at Lavant out of the driving rain in a massive powerslide

The terrible weather added drama to the 12 lap St. Mary's Trophy race for Group 2 style saloons of the type that would have raced between 1959 and 1966 so that from the start it became a fast and furious mad scramble which had all eyes glued to the track.

Grant Williams had qualified on the third row but obviously liked the wet and hammered through the others to get himself into first position by Lavant. He appeared out of the driving rain in a massive powerslide which nobody else even cared to approach. In masterly style he was walking away from the rest of the field.
